This commemorative compilation was produced in honor of Louis Quilico's 75th birthday.  When first meeting Louis Quilico about this project, it was decided to produce a CD that would both be a birthday present to Louis Quilico and a gift from Louis Quilico to the thousands of people that have heard him sing. In a career spanning over 40 years, Mr. Quilico was mostly renowned for the exceptional quality of his live performances. It was therefore important to include live excerpts in this CD.

"Quilico had a baritone voice of power and richness, this huge instrument could roar like a lion and produce beautiful piano and mezza voice singing as well. This recording shows Quilico is still a major vocal and dramatic personality with more than a hint of his younger self…Anyone who shares my enthusiasm for this under-recorded artist will find more than enough illustrations that Louis Quilico was a man who knew a thing or two about singing.”

Vocal Gems - Live from New York
Louis Quilico and Christina Petrowska, voice and piano

Released: October 2002

Label: Welspringe Productions
Christina Petrowska Quilico, piano

Recorded live in New York City on March 30, 1998 during a recital performed in Merkin Hall. Includes two selections from "The Most Happy Fella" along with arias and songs by Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Gretchaninoff, Tschaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Duparc, Debussy, Tosti and Verdi.

Vocal Gems ( 4 stars ) “his memory is kept very much alive through the efforts of his widow, pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico. A number of CDs and videos have been released documenting the art of the great Canadian baritone. This performance took place in Merkin Hall, New York when Quilico was 73…at an age when others had long since retired, he continued to sing with an impressive, virile, vital sound, and his artistry remained undiminished.”

Chants Français et Russes
Louis and Christina Quilico, voice and piano

Label: Welspringe Productions
Order No: WELCD002-98

Louis Quilico, baritone
Christina Petrowska Quilico, piano

Repertoire for baritone solo voice with piano, featuring songs by French and Russian masters.

“In this recording “Chants Francais et Russes” recorded at Toronto’s Glenn Gould Studio, we are offered a unique glimpse into a dynamic pairing of two prominent Canadian artists, baritone Louis Quilico and pianist, Christina Petrowska Quilico. Partners in life as well as music, the husband and wife team presents us with selections from the French and Russian song repertoire. Now in his 74th year, Quilico’s rich, powerful baritone seems undiminished by the passage of time. Indeed, he makes one wonder how many of his younger colleagues could match his vocal scope and sheer beauty of tone. Well-known for her career as a solo artist, Petrowska Quilico blends the virtuosity of a concert pianist with the sensitive ear of a masterful accompanist. Some of these works are fiendishly difficult to play, but she carries them off with aplomb”.
